Usually when someone says I’m “purging” that indicates something very negative. In the US, purging is a huge warning sign that someone is doing something harmful to their body. However, in Nigeria, purging is something you do on a monthly basis. Nigerians purge in order to remove the gunk from their intestines. They use various leaves, trees, and vegetables to accomplish this.
Though I have not joined my husband in his monthly purges, I do recognize that purging in the Nigerian-sense is necessary for our bodies. In the US, we call this detoxing: a completely normal and healthy way to restore our bodies.
Smoothie #1: Green Smoothie
1 Green Apple
1 Banana
1/3 of a Cucumber
1 cup of Spinach
1/2 of Lemon, squeezed into the mixture
1/2 of a cup of water
Recommendations:
- Green apples or Granny Smiths are best.
Smoothie #2: Tonic (okay, so it’s not actually a smoothie. Get over it).
1 tbsp of Ginger
1 Lemon, squeezed into the mixture
1 tbsp of Turmeric
A pinch of Cayenne
3 cups of Water
Boil the water. As it boils you have two options.
Option 1. Blend the remaining ingredients and drop it into the boiling water.
Option 2. Add the ingredients straight into the boiling water.
Either way, let the ingredients boil for a couple of minutes before removing the pot from the stove.
Recommendations:
- The Cayenne is totally optional.
Smoothie #3: Detox Smoothie
1 tbsp of Aloe Vera
1 Green Apple
3 sprigs of Basil
1/2 of a Cucumber
1 cup of Spinach
1/2 a cup of Spinach
Recommendaitons:
- Don’t use more than a tbsp of Aloe Vera!
- Only drink this once or twice a month.
- This doesn’t taste that great, but it’ll definitely help you purge.
- Don’t give into the temptation to add peanut butter or a banana.
- Enjoy! by drinking this quickly.
One day, I’ll join my hubby in his purging. When I do, I’ll send you the recipes. Until then, enjoy your detox!
