Black Bean Burger Trial and Errors #1

Wow, what a mess. What a disaster…if only it had worked…Whelp, we tried. That’s the gist of this recipe. But try it, it might work for you.

B.B.B. = Black Bean Burgers

2 cans of Black Beans

2 tbsp of Flax Seed Meal

3 tbsp of Water

1 cup of Oats

Salt

1 tsp of Cumin

1 Garlic Clove or 1 tsp of Garlic Powder

3/4 of a cup of Ian’s Gluten Free Breadcrumbs

Recommendations:

  1. Use more spices: paprika, oregano, parsley. Get creative!

Directions: (Note: this recipe did not go as planned)

  1. Drain, heat, and smash Black Beans
  2. Make Flax Egg: mix 2 tbsp of Flax Meal with 3 tbsp of water
  3. Mix Black Beans with seasonings.
  4. Mix in Flax Egg
  5. Form BBB patties
  6. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
  7. Remove from refrigerator
  8. Test a pattie in a pan of hot oil
  9. Freak out because it fell apart

So, yeah, that didn’t work. Instead, we tried this:

10. Unform patties

11. Stir in Oats

12. Form balls (like falafel)

13. Place balls in hot oiled pan. Flip balls after reaching desired browning results.

14. Add in more balls.

15. Oil boils over. Freak out that the oil is boiling over.

Hmmm…The first balls worked…Let’s try this again.

16. Pour oil out. Add new oil.

17. Add in remaining balls

18. Turn balls over when desired browning is reached.

19. Remove balls.

20. Finish!

That was definitely not the plan. I’m not even sure why the oil boiled over. I’m also not sure why the Flax Egg didn’t work. I’ll try it again, another day…But the Black Bean BALLS were delicious!
